Immigration has profoundly changed the city of Barcelona in recent years, bringing new children into the education system of Catalonia. Schools have responded by creating newcomer classrooms that teach language skills and support students’ adaptation to schools. These programs aim to support students and promote social cohesion in schools, but face many challenges, especially in secondary schools. This talk provides a summary of my dissertation study, which looks at these newcomer programs in Barcelona, using ethnographic interviews, observations, and policy documents. I describe the framing of the project, and summarize early impressions from the research, including:
* The process of policy implementation;
* Transitions from newcomer to mainstream classrooms in two secondary schools;
* The teacher perspective on meeting new student needs;
* Latin American immigrant student experiences of belonging and adaptation in Barcelona.
Future analysis and findings from the study will shed new light on schools as a context of reception for immigrant children. From teachers and students, to policymakers and families, all are affected by the changes brought by new immigration. This study of Barcelona’s newcomer programs will thus bring important new insights and knowledge about the process of cultural and social integration in schools, a critical issue in today’s world.
